Tissue Collection
Tissue is collected in
the operating theatre. This ensures that the sample is collected as close
as possible to the time of removal from the patient and that it is
collected under sterile conditions.
Collection of the tissue is conducted in such a way that the routine
pathology analysis of the tumour is unaffected. Wherever possible, matched
normal tissue is collected from the resected specimen. The samples are
snap frozen in theatre to arrest the degradation of RNA in the tissue.
Tissues are processed to provide:
- snap frozen 100mg specimens of tumour suitable for RNA, DNA and
protein analyses, stored at -70oC
- snap frozen 100 mg specimens of matched normal tissues for
comparison, stored at -70oC
- frozen sections of the tumour/normal interface for
immunohistochemistry, stored at -70oC
- paraffin embedded sections of the tumour/normal interface for
standard histology, special stains and in-situ hybridisation of RNA
De-identified demographic and pathological data are available on old
specimens.
